Beware of the companies that appear to be Malaysia but are based overseas.

This can be very costly as you can see from the 2 examples above. Those companies go to great lengths to misinform their customers. For example, they advertise Malaysia telephone numbers, use the Malaysia flag and/or they show prices in Malaysian Ringgit. However, the reality is that they are not located in Malaysia so they will be shipping the products from overseas. When you receive your order you will be hit with a large bill from the freight company.

Overseas shopping check list

Make sure to ask if they are an Malaysia company

Their advertised price DOES NOT have SST, import duty or customs fees

Most banks charge 4% international transaction fee on all overseas purchases

Any parcel worth over 1,000 MYR triggers SST, import duty and customs fees

Lowering the declared value is illegal and leaves you with a lower insurance value

Extra 5% import duty is always charged to all jewellery arriving in Malaysia

SST is calculated not just on the declared value, but also on the 5% import duty, shipping and insurance cost.

Bottom line - there is no way to get around these extra fees, unless you buy local.
